After what can only be described as a 'right palava' - involving not being able to get on a night train and running to the bus station to see if we could get a sleeper bus - we managed to begin our journey from Hanoi to Hue.

| Always expect the unexpected - and legs appearing from the roof of the bus was very unexpected indeed. |
The bus ride - which we expected to take 12 hours at most - took 22 hours. We were very grateful when the journey ended, and slightly miffed that our plan to sight see for the day had been scuppered! We checked into a hostel and thought about what to do the next day.
For a while I'd wanted to do some motorbike touring of Vietnam made famous by the television program top gear. In every city you visit there is always the opportunity to take a guide and a motorbike or moped and go off and explore the country. As Alan had never driven either we were reluctant to book onto a tour, so we decided to take a day exploring the countryside outside Hue to see how we went.
Obviously riding a moped has it's dangers and these are only multiplied by doing this in a foreign country, so it was good to see Alan making sure he was visible and not going too fast - in fact, a lot of the time he found using leg propulsion was good enough for him!
 |
| The classic leg propulsion with purple poncho combo - I couldn't help singing the steptoe and son theme tune. |
 |
| Playing the part of an English tourist excellently - we stopped off for a Vietnamese coffee. |
 |
| Me on my moped. |
In the afternoon we went an explored Hue's Citadel. It was very big, and quite wet.

We decided that the day on the mopeds had gone well enough to book a days guided tour from Hue to Hoi An, the next city on our itinerary.
