Udaipur

On the way to Udaipur we stopped to see a man using his oxen to run a water wheel that brought up water from a well and dropped in to a stream that flowed to his fields of crops for irrigation. It was great to see the device in action and I could see how useful it would be in the desert environment of Rajasthan.

We reached Udaipur and first stopped at some gardens where we relaxed on a patch of grass along with many other people enjoying the cooler climate of the gardens.

When we got to Udaipur we went for an explore and to find some where to eat. We ended up at Udaipur’s Bathing Ghat that is on Lake Pichola – the large lake in the middle of the city. We found a rooftop restaurant with a great view of the lake and sunset and had some food before heading back to our hotel to have a beer on the hotels rooftop. This particular day was a Muslim festival so we were treated to some fireworks and we were joined by a group of Lebanese girls who were happy to have a sing along with us!

The main tourist attraction in Udaipur is the City Palace which looms over Lake Pichola. We spent a couple of hours looking round the palace with the Lebanese grils we had met the night before. The Palace was extremely crowded and it took us a lot longer to look round than we had expected.

After the palace we sat on the grass outside the palace before heading to a rooftop bar for some food and to enjoy another beautiful sunset. We took a walk round to the other side of the lake so we could look at the City Palace at night when it is all lit up. After enjoying those views we had a leisurely stroll back along streets where Cows were doing their best to create an eerie atmosphere – I’d say they succeeded!
